Personal Statement

My name is Nick and I am a certified teacher of Mathematics in the state of New Jersey. I attended Rowan University in Southern New Jersey where I earned my degrees in Mathematics and Subject Matter Education in the fall of 2012. While away at school, I was an active member of the Men’s Volleyball Team and The Rowan Musical Theater Company. College was a great experience, but I knew my heart was in Northern New Jersey and closer to New York City. Since graduating, I have taught at Cedar Grove High School from 2013-2016, Bergen Tech from 2016-2019 and I am currently working at a state recognized school in Essex County. At Livingston High School, I am teaching Geometry and Algebra 2. I have also taught courses that include: Algebra I, Basic Skills Geometry, Honors Geometry, Algebra II, Honors Algebra II, College Mathematics, Advanced Pre Calculus, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC. I love what I do and I do not think there is a more rewarding career out there for me. I decided to start tutoring business because I wanted the teaching to extend beyond the classroom and to other students not in the district. With an open dialogue with the teacher, parents, and the student, a noticeable improvement will be made. And that is my promise.

    Testimonials

    • "Nick has an excellent mastery of mathematics. He is able to not only use his knowledge in solving problems but also to explain solutions carefully and completely. In addition to having outstanding organizational skills, Nick is a very pleasant young man who works well either alone or in a group. His work on projects was excellent, including his use of technology such as Sketchpad." Janet H. Caldwell, Ph. D. Rowan University Professor of Mathematics

    • "I liked how he was very relaxed and chill when teaching us, like sometimes he would even sit at the student’s tables and it would be easier to ask him questions. What I mean to say is unlike other teachers, Mr. Mellina was very approachable and very helpful and straightforward when asked for help. I also like how he doesn’t second guess himself or stutter when answering questions and he rarely gets something incorrect.

    • makes him look like a very professional and experienced teacher." Anonymous Student Bergen County Technical Schools 2018/2019 "He was very good with his words. He said things clearly and never really mixed up things. And when someone didn’t understand it he wouldn’t just repeat what he said. Instead, he would try and rephrase it to see if they understood it better that way. I also liked that he made a few mistakes here and there to remind us that even the teacher can make mistakes, so it’s okay to make mistakes from time to time." I recommend Mr. Mellina highly as he possesses a rare combination of academic ability, maturity, and leadership." Dr. Eric Milou Rowan University Professor of Mathematics "Nick demonstrates a great rapport with the students in this class where the abilities and behaviors are varied. He works to understand each student’s needs, and he is able to adjust his teaching to meet those needs. Students clearly respect Nick and respond to his proactive approaches to classroom management." Angela McEvoy Special Education Teacher Clearview Regional High School "Nick is very enthusiastic, well-organized, driven and willing to bring a great deal of creativity into the classroom. The lessons and activities he has planned are beyond that of a 2nd year teacher. Nick seeks out opportunities on a weekly basis to infuse interdisciplinary lessons into his teaching as well as “the latest” available technology." Janine Miscia-Barboza K-12 Mathematics/Science Supervisor Cedar Grove School District "As a Mathnasium Instructor, Nick must assist students in elementary grades up to high school and college with any topic in Mathematics in a small group setting. The students have very diverse ability levels." Kathie D’Orazio NJ Certified Teacher of Mathematics “Mr. Mellina is so not boring–he has an awesome sense of humor which keeps the class interesting. He takes the time to make sure everyone understands what is being taught. I actually wanted to pay attention and learn new things in Mr. Mellina’s class.” Ella, Student Bergen County Technical Schools
